Vienna, Day 2
After grabbing breakfast at a pastry shop near our hotel, we he
aded over to the Haus de Musik, an interactive museum, the only one we set foot in during our whole trip and it turned out to be Super fun! There were a bunch of exhibits that we could play around with. One where we rolled die to make our own viennese waltz. another where you could try your hand at conducting the vienna philharmonic orchestra. There was also a self-guided audio tour about some of the most famous composers of vienna to give us more context into the rich history of the city and the integral role of music throughout (for such uncultured folk as myself...). it was here also where i was first introduced to classical crossover in the form of the Mozart Lounge. A retro-y room with comfy sofas where you could just kick back and absorb the techno beats mixed into classic mozart pieces. very cool. it made Such an impression, i had to buy the cd.
We lunched at a biesl, which is a cross between a bistro & a pub. I had these noodles with ham & cheese and egg. The noodles were quite interesting cuz they're not like italian pasta at all. they're like short little things that looked like they were just pinched off.
After that we hopped on the metro and booked it over to Schonbrunn castle, the summer house of the Hofbergs. It's really reminiscent of the palace of versaille outside of paris but a lot more understated. It was really beautiful and the self-guided audio tour was SOOOo cool. It felt like we got to see SO much of the castle rooms and stuff. And some of the rooms were just awe-inspiring. But we weren't allowed to take any pics!! Our feet were ready to fall off after the 1-hr+ tour tho, so we didn't have the energy to explore the grounds much. Altho, there was a maze that sounded intriguing. And pretty fountains and stuff. most of the flowers were not in bloom yet, so just imagine how grand it would look with flowers!
We decided to stop for dinner before heading to the hotel to grab our bags and metro over to the train station for our final overnighter. But it wasn't till we sat down that we realized we were really gonna be cutting it close on time. When our food arrived, R started at her wiener schnitzel (fried pork filet) like a mad woman! i was like....um...R...are you ok? her reply? "omg! i lOooooooove this. it is SOOooooo good! do you want some?" All the while, barely stopping for breath as she cut it into little pieces and devoured the whole thing. =P hahaha i gotta say that was the most entertaining meal of the WHOLE trip! C, on the other hand, enjoyed the meal and took her time. Even ordering a dessert. R forgot all about dessert and after the dishes were cleared, was like "check please". The server musta thought we were crazy. haha He was like "calm down. there's still dessert". oh boy... my retelling probably doesn't do the story justice at all. it really needs to be reenacted.
Thankfully, we made it to our train with time to spare and ended up we sat on the tracks for a good 30 mins (i think there were some technical difficulties) before we actually made it out of the station. Oh yeah! and we were also surprised to discover that the overnight trains did not divide men & women into different compartments. So imagine our shock when we walked into our room and saw a guy. But he was really nice. Helped us with our bags and stuff. I was so out of it that when the 2 other guys assigned to our cabin knocked on our door in the middle of the night, all i did was reach over to unlock the door and mumble over to R, "is it passport control? No? ok..." and went back to sleep. I didn't even realize there were other ppl in our room till we left the next morning! HAHA
